Sunlight Seeker-Rose

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW Nature's Arrangement Challenge. The challenge was issued by the very accomplished artist, James Coulter .

James said: "For this challenge you'll have to go outside (yes, even if it's hot). Choose some flowers on the ground and stand from one to six feet away from them. Use only these colors: Ultra Blue, Cad Yellow Med (or Lt), Cad Rd Lt and white. Limit your painting time to one hour (don't cheat!). Using only three brush sizes (large, med and small) start with a large brush and cover the canvas with thin paint (not runny), getting most of the large, dark areas blocked in. Then work dark to light, thin to thick. Have a focal point with darker darks, lighter lights, more intense color, thicker paint and fewer sharper edges. The rest of the painting should support that area with less visual energy (softer edges, less intense colors, less contrast). Use the smallest brush only at the end and in the focal area only (last 15 minutes). Use a value scale of at least 8 to 2 (dark to light). And try not to use white to lighten unless it is a cool color (blue or purple). "

There's a lot of good advice in this challenge. I found it really tough to attempt a red flower with such a limited palette! Would have loved to have added some alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, and
quinacridone red.

Floral Fragrance-French Window

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess, Catherine, provided the photos.

I chose this scene because I viewed it as an opportunity to get really loose and do a lot of implied detail. It may look as though it were done very quickly...but not so. This one took as long to complete as many of my detailed paintings do...around 2 hrs. Kinda like an orchestrated fight! Lol!

Fallen Star-Water Lily

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The host, Robert, provided the photos.

Don't let the strange title throw ya. According to an Indian legend, the water lily was once a star. It fell from the sky on the water and changed into a flower. Come to think of it, it does resemble a star. For me, it certainly is the star attraction of a pond.

I really like the color combo of Thio Violet with the accompanying greens, blue, and touch of yellow.

Flower Power-Water Lilies

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Jean supplied the reference photo.

This is in answer to the super color challenge put forth on WDE this week. It's something I've had my in mind for quite a long time. To add extreme color, including color "surprises", to a subject to energize and "excite" the painting.
I really enjoyed the process.

The hardboard first received a coat of black gesso. Love that black gesso...I call it "black magic" the way it makes colors "pop" from the very first strokes.
I used a palette knife and brush for the textured paint.
Thanks for stopping by!

Peugeot Planter

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

Here's my submission to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The photo showed an abandoned/retired 1938 Peugeot 202 truck in France. The photo was graciously supplied by Robert...Thanks Robert!!

I really thought long and hard before tackling this one. The old truck was a challenge for me with the mechanical straight lines and curves...the sort of thing I usually avoid.

It looked sad all alone and abandoned, so I brought a little cheer into it's life by doing what nature does...turn it into a planter. A nice contrast between organic and inorganic--man and nature.

Flowering Almond

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to James Parker's Windows To The Words Challenge. This month the challenge is flowers. He has some great reference photos from which to choose. This one is flowering almonds...they really reminded me of cherry blossoms.
The flower challenge runs the whole month of April....Come on...Join in!!

I talked to James on the phone today! It was great to hear his Texas drawl...coulda been Southern drawl...bout the same to me! He informed me, much to my shock, that my bluebird painting had been selected by his panel of judges as a winner and the prize is a subscription to Birds and Blooms magazine. Wow! I am really honored. There were many great paintings in that challenge! Thank you, James and panel!

Iris Garden

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.

Ahh...Spring is just around the corner!! My all time favorite time of year. Warmth...Growth...Life! Thank you, God, for allowing me to experience another Spring.

Once again, as I did last week ( the coyote painting Fri., March 5th) , toward the last of the painting, I used the brush much like a painting knife. Load a gob of under mixed paint and slide it unto the canvas with one swipe...go back and re load. Makes for good texture and paint mix surprises.

The source photo was supplied by Helen for the WDE at Wet Canvas.
