San Francisco Streetcar

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

Here's my submission for the June ADNW painting challenge. This fine challenge is put on by Lee Brown, a very talented artist/ photographer. Thank you, Lee!

I used a tight crop to center in on the portion that caught my eye upon first glance at the total photo.
It all came together surprisingly fast.

As always, I tried to make the painting my own...to not slavishly copy the photo.
As humans, we have a tendency to be control freaks when painting. The main thing I have picked up on my daily painting jaunts is to carefully observe what the paint does. If it looks good, then leave it alone and move on. Don't try to control every little line by over detailing. In other words, I try to let the paint control me...not me control the paint.

San Fran Rooftops

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This painting is my submission to Karin Jurick's DSFDF.

The hard, straight lines of cityscapes have made me shy away from this genre. For this challenge I decided to really loosen up-go with invented color-to use many small dabs of paint similar to a rough pointillism. I wanted to get away from the up-tight "painting within the lines" feel.
It was a fun challenge...although intimidating at first.

Ups And Downs In Frisco

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This was done for Karin Jurick's DSFDF. The photo is a real doozy of a challenge with an overload of detail to deal with and edit.

I wound up handling it as a purely abstract work. Blocks of value to create a pattern, using interesting color along the way. The colors are not an imitation of the ones in the photo...after all, it is a painting.
Hope you like it.

San Francisco Victorian

Oil on 7x5 gessoed hardboard.
This is my submission for Karin Jurick's DSFDF. Architecture has never been one of my strengths when it comes to subject matter. So this week's challenge dragged me kicking and screaming out of my comfort zone. Thanks, Karin...I needed that.
