Tribute To Mother's Day

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel. The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. I was searching or a new approach for this painting. First I intended to keep it soft in order to express the tender mood...I wanted the color to be invented instead of being enslaved by the actual colors...I wanted the shadow areas to meld together. Much of it is done in thinned washes. Notice the cross behind the mother's head?

Contemporary Cat #4

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
I first toned the support with a mixture of warm acrylic colors. I then used oils to present the cat. Some colorful line work was used to describe the subject. Much of the original acrylic remains visible. When doing this style, creativity rules over realism. I disregard the actual colors of the cat and drive on with my artistic license. This painting could be called contemporary or expressionistic. Something a bit different for me. I really enjoyed doing this one.

Gold Finch

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel. As I mentioned many moons ago on this blog, I've always had a strong attraction to birds. As a child I drew, painted and carved them from wood. I can name all the local varieties and identify them by their songs...yet I never considered myself as a 'birdwatcher'. Anyhoo, here's one of my favorites, the goldfinch. Love the bright yellow and black that God gave them.

Cow-Animal Art-In Progress

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel. Thought I'd post this painting in an early stage in order to explain some of my procedure. First the panel was covered with med. dark and black gesso then toned with thinned alizarin crimson acrylic. Then, using oil paint straight from the tube, the darks were established on the cow.
Then comes the challenging and fun part. I attempt to mix each light spot of color to match the warmth or coolness plus the value which I observe in the reference...each stroke may vary from previous strokes. Once I match the color I'm after, I apply it with a single stroke...trying not to mess with it any further. Then go onto the next color match and stroke.
This process maintains a freshness and immediacy. Each small section of the painting will have the appeal of an abstract causing the eye to linger and find many small surprises.

Contemporary Kitten

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel. This is another in my contemporary explorations. The first was a cat posted here on Feb. 14th. It starts with a canvas which is basically toned with acrylic to resemble an abstract. The subject is then painted on top of this with oils. I allow much of the pre-existing acrylic the remain visible in the final painting. I may have overpainted this one and covered too much of the acrylic.
