Mountain Bluebird

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Color of Blue Challenge at DPW presented by  the super talented Qiang Huang. He instructed; Do a painting with a blue object as the center of focus. High key (light value dominant) is preferred. Please try not to use red and oranges to contrast, but still make the blue color look clean, and pop.

This was an interesting challenge...Thank you Qiaing!
Never realized how much ya really miss the complements until ya can't use them. Something like missing the water when the well runs dry.
Hope I didn't bend the rules by that background looking sorta orange-y .  It's made up of yellow ochre plus a touch of purple to gray it. It's a camera thing.

Sweet Nothin's-Macaws

Close ups
Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Li was the gracious hostess.

The macaws looked like they were posing for a Valentine card. It looks like one is whispering sweet nothin's into the other one's ear. The panel was first toned with red acrylic. Thanks for looking and commenting!

Ray, A Golden Drop Of Sun-Deer

 Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Kay was the gracious hostess.
Just had to paint this doe.
I immediately started hearing the Julie Andrews song from The Sound Of Music, "Doe A Deer". Thus the long title, "A Drop Of Golden Sun" (I emphasized the sun behind the doe's head.

The reference photo

Once again, The background is completely "fly by the seat of your pants" made up from the imagination.
Oftentimes, when doing a background like this...not having an idea of where I'm going...it can be pretty intimidating and can be easily put off "until later". But when I jump right in ( like jumping into a pool of COLD water)  I feel especially rewarded . I mean of course, when it turns out at least half way right. I enjoy seeing all the paint surprises that happened along the way.

A Tribute-Mare

 Close ups

Acrylic on 12x9 gessoed art board.

Remember the cutting horse painting I posted 6 days ago on Nov. 8th? Well, This painting is for that same lady. It's a tribute painting for her friend who, sadly, just lost this 4 year old mare.

I used basically the same mixed media technique as I did on her Nov. 8th piece. The only difference being that I first applied gesso and let it dry showing the brushstrokes. They wind up showing nicely in the finished painting. I also toned the board with a red acrylic which helps to harmonize/unify the painting. And, yep, I also used a black Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen.

Hope you like it...let me know what you think...pro or con.

Flower Power-Wisteria

 Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lin was the gracious hostess.
The reference photos were great. I really had a hard time choosing. The animals were very tempting...but wanting to try another floral, I picked the wisteria.

Tried to keep it expressive, painterly, and textured. Don't know if I succeeded, but it was fun trying.
Thanks for looking and commenting.

Cutting Horse-Rodeo

 Close ups

Acrylic on 12x9 gessoed art board.

Something a little different for a change.
I didn't gesso the support as I normally do, so the surface was very smooth. I started it with colorful random washes...watching how they swirled and puddled on the slick surface. I applied thicker acrylics in some select areas. I like the expressionist color and paint movement.
I also used a black Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen.
This technique was very freeing and I enjoyed it!

This was painted for a lady in Texas. That's her on her cutting horse.

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Connie was the gracious hostess.

It was really hard making a choice between all those super animal pics! I settled on the ever munching panda. Love those animals.

I have put this painting into the The Hurricane Sandy Fundraiser Auction put on by  the DPW Challenge.
The auction starting bid for this is $50.00. All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army Hurricane Sandy Relief except for $5.00 S/H.
Check out the auction HERE and see all the great art being donated to help those who so desperately need it.
