Black Bowl Egg

This is my contribution to The Broken Egg Challenge at DPW posted by that really fine artist, Carol Marine.

The black bowl seemed to make the colors more pronounced. The longer I looked, the more colors I saw! I swear, I was only drinking coffee!! Lol!

Strut Your Stuff-Rooster

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lin was the hostess who supplied this great reference photo!

I picked the fancy rooster. Chickens were a very common subject to me a few years ago. It's nice to try one once more.

I've been surfing the blogs as usual. One thing that was mentioned quite a bit was using enough paint. And I came across this quote by John Singer Sargent: "No small dabs of colour - you want plenty of paint to paint with."
I have been guilty of being stingy with paint...so this time my mounds of color were a little more generous.

Fishin' For Complements-Bear

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel

This is my contribution to The Complementary Challenge at DPW posted by a really fine artist, Layne Cook.

Layne's challenge: Using 2 complementary colors (i.e. orange and blue, yellow and purple, green and red) take one color in both directions on the color wheel (for example, orange, red orange and yellow orange) and do not mix the complement (blue) unless it's to make grays (mixed with oranges). You can use white sparingly. The example palettes show the possible color palettes, but not the neutrals. All kinds of yummy grays are possible!

Now THIS was a challenging challenge...Lol! I kept wanting to use forbidden colors to add chroma and values. I stuck with red and green. Red being the variable.

Hope ya like it! :)

Flower Power-Dahlias

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Susan was the hostess who supplied this great reference photo! Thanks, Susan!!

I was really tempted to do one of the doggies that were pictured, but I forced myself to get into a more uncomfortable zone. Namely flowers. I was encouraged by the waterlilies of last week, so I tried the dahlias. I used the painting knife once more. I also pushed the color.

Thanks for looking and commenting!

Different Destinations-Cityscape

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Street View Challenge at DPW posted by the one and only Carol Marine.

Carol snapped this photo on a recent trip to San Francisco. Our challenge was to paint our version of it or use our own photo.
I have always felt somewhat intimidated by cityscapes with all the straight lines and details. On the other hand, the photo opened a great deal of opportunity to crop, change, and interpret. And that's always a lot of fun! So thanks, once more, Carol for a great challenge!

Box Of Chocolates-Water Lily

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Ros was the hostess who supplied this great reference photo!

I was in the mood to use the painting knife for an impressionistic painting.
So, I painted my impression of the water lily. I was trying to manipulate thick paint until it resembled what I was after. Instead of being in control of the paint and making it take on a preconceived appearance, I watched the paint perform (or do its' own thing) under the guidance of the knife. It's like a box of chocolates...ya never know what you're gonna get. This is a FUN way to paint!!
Must confess, I'm still under the influence of Julie Ford Oliver and her great fracturing technique.

Carol asked us to take the photo below and
crop, edit, or use your artistic license with it, but use this photo for this one. Have fun!

My usual tendency is to tighten up and paint everything realistically- straight edges and all- when doing subjects such as vehicles, architecture, etc. So I had to remind myself to loosen up with this one.
Thanks for a great challenge, Carol!
Hope ya like it! :)

I picked this attentive fellow. He appears to be really listening up. I wanted to experiment with a slightly different background from my norm. I kinda like it.
