Bahamian Portrait

First step

First I used Pigma Pens and a wash of acrylic to get me started...this is in the challenge. Thought about keeping it but decided "Naw"...I have it's image in my file.

At last...one that I am really satisfied with! One of my main heroes is Scott Burdick. Check out his work.
Before doing this painting, I went and viewed loads of his images to let it all sink in. I think that may have helped with the outcome. I have been attempting his style for a long time, and I feel this is the closest I've ever come.

French Toast-Still Life

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Paint your Toaster Challenge posted by Shelley Ross. Shelley wrote: The shiny metal surface creates a playground for tinkering with reflections. The manufactured straight lines are an interesting alternative to organic objects.

My new toaster has a non reflective plastic coating, so it wouldn't do. I dug around and found my old one taking up residence in a corner of my basement. I gave one side a quick Windex shine and set a glass of French merlot wine in front of it.
So this is a French toast to all my art and blogging friends! Thanks for making my day every day. :)

Eye See You-Cat

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lin was the gracious hostess. Thanks for the great reference of your cat, Dave.Link
The title "Eye See You" of course refers to the beautiful cat eyes.
My objective today was to push expressive color. Below is how the painting started. It was really blah and boring. That's what made me decide to push the color and add some shadows.

LinkThis is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Shoe Challenge posted by Cheri Homaee.
Cheri asked us to paint significant shoes in our life.

These saddle shoes belonged to my wife who passed away in '04. She loved dancing. So these shoes symbolize her healthy teen days. Although her last few years on earth were very difficult... I know she is dancing now.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Jean was the gracious hostess. Thanks for the great reference photo.

This grazer just seemed really peaceful nibbling away in the sunshine.
I had fun laying it on thick in selected spots and pushing the color.

Veterans Day 2011

Some of you folks probably remember this painting from the past.
I always feel an overwhelming need to pay tribute to all those in service to this wonderful country. Honoring patriotism and God needs to take a high priority in these very trying times.

This painting of a praying soldier was done with love and in support of our troops. God bless them.

Sharing-Figurative

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Crowd Challenge posted by Carol Marine .
Carol posted a photo of a rather large crowd at a restaurant.
We were asked to select and paint a part of it.

I selected a really close crop of a couple sharing a drink, perhaps after lunch.
This one stokes curiosity. Being faceless, they could be anyone we choose them to be...me...or you...or friends that we know. The painting's intent is to invite the viewer into a private moment to search and question.

Jungle Gem- Macaw

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Marianne was the gracious hostess. Thanks for the great reference photo, Marianne!

I tried a different approach on painting this beautiful macaw.

First I sketched in some key lines with my black Sharpie. Then I applied very thin oil paint in washes. Lastly I selectively gobbed on thick color in focal areas. Much of what you see are thinned washes. Some of the original pen lines were left visible because I thought they added to the look.
It was fun working with the thin washes! I hope you like it!
