Gaggle Taking A Gander

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

Geese have a comical look oftentimes. These were really taking a gander at the photographer.
Bunny at Wet Canvas graciously supplied this image for the WDE. Thank you, Bunny.

Ms. Moose

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

Gary Keimig shot the photo of this female moose in Wyoming. A great artist himself, he lives in a land of fascinating subjects for an artist...from wildlife to landscapes. He recently started monthly Wilderness Art Challenge featuring wildlife. So...this is my submission to the April challenge. Thanks for the inspiring photo, Gary! :)

Windows-Rousillon, France

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

My submission for WDE at Wet Canvas this week. The reference photo is a scene from Rousillon, France and was supplied by Joan.

I used the palette knife quite a bit on this one. I really liked using it for doing basically straight edges quickly. Very handy for architecture.

Idol Tryouts-Sunrise Serenade

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.

Looks as if these two gulls are trying out for American Idol. Hope they win! They're sure putting their hearts in it.

Just felt the need to cut loose with color/bravado.

Below is the prepared canvas panel. I love working on this type of surface. First, I haphazardly applied drops of white and black gesso. I brushed it enough to give it a marbled effect. Then dried it with a blow dryer. Second, using acrylic paint, I put a few small dabs of yel. ochre at the top...cad. red lt. toward the middle...and alizeron crimson at the bottom. These were loosely brushed around. This creates an exciting surface that looks ready to stand alone as a piece of art. Painting with oils on top of this is a true
pleasure.

Sedona Sun

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

Here is my submission for this month's A Day Not Wasted painting challenge. The proprietor is Lee Brown and he uses a high dynamic range (HDR) photography process to capture the colors. His photos are great to paint from!
This is from Red Rock Park in Sedona, Az. Beautiful rock formations! You should really zip over there and enter...you have all of April! :)

This painting is in direct contrast to my previous post (Apr.10) of the Smokey Mts.
The Smokey Mts. was painted from very little detail information in the reference photo.
Whereas Sedona has an overwhelming amount! Had to be selective on what to include.

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my submission to WDE at Wet Canvas. The image was supplied by Mary. Thanks Mary!
The original photo was fairly dark and largely monochrome blue. I kicked up the color and add some morning light. I'm pretty happy with the result. Hope y'all like it! :)

Crown Of Gold

Close up

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my submission to Saundra Lane Galloway's great blog, Art For Life. This month her challenge features super animal shots from the Denver Zoo. Come on , artists!! Join in! :)

I love painting the big cats!
The way in which the sun illuminated the outer edges of the lion's mane, I was reminded of a crown...and , well...after all...he is the King of beasts.

Flowering Almond

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to James Parker's Windows To The Words Challenge. This month the challenge is flowers. He has some great reference photos from which to choose. This one is flowering almonds...they really reminded me of cherry blossoms.
The flower challenge runs the whole month of April....Come on...Join in!!

I talked to James on the phone today! It was great to hear his Texas drawl...coulda been Southern drawl...bout the same to me! He informed me, much to my shock, that my bluebird painting had been selected by his panel of judges as a winner and the prize is a subscription to Birds and Blooms magazine. Wow! I am really honored. There were many great paintings in that challenge! Thank you, James and panel!

Lucey Goosey Loosely

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.

Wendy hosted WDE at Wet canvas this week. She graciously supplied this image..

Like many other artists I know, I seem to be on an unending quest to learn how to paint loosely. To suggest the subject and eliminate all but the most essential details. Unfortunately knowing what you want to do and doing it can be two very different things. Anywho, here's my attempt.

Easter 2010

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
On this Good Friday, I wish you all a happy Easter. Please remember the true meaning.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Luke 23:34 NIV
Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Mark 16: 4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.
