Jelly Filled Dough Nut

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.

How about a jelly filled dough nut? No need for guilt feelings with this one because there are no calories. It's guaranteed not to spoil. It will be there day after day for your enjoyment. It was painted with a painting knife and a brush. The paint is generously lathered on like frosting. The textured surface is very nice!

Apples-The Trio

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
It's been quite a while since I've done a still life. These beautiful apples were painted with both a painting knife and a brush.
There are areas with generous paint texture. Great effect!

Buffalo Portrait

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
Here's a handsome ol' boy from way out West. I just felt like it was time to paint another buffalo...technically a 'bison', I guess. Whatever you choose to call him, he is a survivor...removed from greatness, yet still a survivor. The great majestic herds that once roamed freely didn't fit in with the plans of man.

Elvis Sighting

Graphite (hb, 3b, and 5b) on 14"x11" 100 lb. Canson Bristol Vellum, medium tooth.

The detail shot is a truer representation of the paper color. Somehow the full shot took on that warm cast.

A dear friend in Tennessee asked me to do an Elvis drawing for her. I used to do a lot of celebrities in the 80's & 90's. So I went upstairs to check out my collection of Elvis photos and found a drawing I had started 8 or 9 years ago!! Needless to say, I jumped on that like a 'duck on a June bug'! Here he is all finished and just awaiting my friend's approval. We'll see if he has a new home after all this time. She might like it or she might not...she can do whatever she wants to do, as long as she don't step on my blue suede shoes. ;)
ps...She didn't like it. She said she Lovvvveesss it...( I think I spelled it close to the way she did.) Anyhow, Elvis will be heading to Tennessee.

Generation Montage--Graphite

Something really different this time, dear readers.

This is graphite (hb, 3b, and 5b) on 100 lb. Canson Bristol Vellum, medium tooth.
C&C welcome. The paper is 14 x11...image size is 12x9.
The last time I did a graphite drawing like this was at least 7 years ago. This drawing includes gran, dad, and son. It went surprisingly fast and was surprisingly fun and rewarding. The son goes by spOOky and hosted this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. He posted separate pics of his dad and gran. He uses his photo as his avatar. I just combined all three pictures into a generational montage. Let me know what ya think!

This was a lot of fun to get back into. If anyone out there in cyber-land is interested in having a graphite portrait done, please contact me by email.

Swan-Animal Art

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.

Swans have a special place in my heart...I never tire of painting them. Each piece of art seems to come with its' own challenge. With this painting it was the water. The photo it was done from showed the water as appearing too flat. I attempted the suggest depth by smoother water in the distance as opposed to darker, thicker paint in the ripples/waves in the foreground.

This photo was supplied by spOOky for the WDE at the Wet Canvas...a fun art event every week with a bunch of talented and fun artists.

Matterhorn Mountain

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel. So many have attempted the Matterhorn (climbing) and failed...I thought, " What the hey....I can attempt it...if I fail it's just a messed up canvas...not a 4,000ft. drop!" Hope ya like it.
Just as a side note: it sure is winter in Ohio. We had sub zero wind chills yesterday. Today it's snow and ice coming down. I realize there are plenty of you out in cyber-land who have it much worse. Ah...but the swallows are leaving Capistrano to return. And the weather man said spring is now advancing from Florida toward the north at the rate of 15 miles per day.

Malamute-Animal Art

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel. I enjoyed doing this one today. The image was supplied by Joel for the Weekend Drawing Event at Wet Canvas. I used the painting knife in a few spots just to add variety and surface interest.

The Tiger-Tatiana

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
Tatiana! This is the same cat that was involved in the news on Christmas day. After all that went on that day at the San Francisco Zoo, Tatiana is like a symbol to me. She wound up dead due to man's thoughtlessness....and yes, even cruelty. This powerful and majestic creature is no more. There were others that suffered that day, but they worked hard for that just reward.
Sorry...I'll get off the soap box now.
The jpg for this was supplied by Chaos for the Week End Drawing Event at www.wetcanvas.com.
The background is totally the acrylic used to tone the canvas.

Spirit...Commission Completed

Spirit is done! She received the final ok from my two super friends from Santa Barbara, Ca. and will soon be winging her way west.
Once again, this post looks much like yesterday's image of Spirit. But plenty of improvements have happened. Color adjustments have been made in the fur, background foliage, and the closest ice-plant in the foreground. There are areas on the fur and the closest ice-plant which have been treated to thick textured paint...like the icing on a cake.
And last, but not least, the gleam has been added to the eyes of this beautiful dog.

Tomorrow I will post a painting of Tatiana...It is a tribute to the tiger from the San Fransisco Zoo.

Spirit... WIP Third Installment

Oil on 24x36 stretched canvas.
This may appear very close in appearance to the second installment, but there are many important changes...some are small but still important. I have zeroed in on more correct color in the various fur areas...deepened and corrected some darks....brought the ice-plant in the foreground into sharper focus in order to enhance the depth. This step was emailed to the folks who commissioned the painting, Mitch and Jeffyne. They ok'd it (they are so great to communicate with)...so onward to the finish!! Stay tuned friends and neighbors.
